LAYOUT STARTER SHINGLE
The layout marks on a starter shingle are embedded directly onto the starter shingle at the time of manufacturing. This starter shingle is meant for metric shingles only. The shingle is 39 3/8” long and is meant to be stacked along the rake edge and along vertical walls maintaining desired field shingle reveal to the weather.
The shingle can be separated at the perforation for a 4 ¼’ shingle or installed in its entirety (9”) if desirable for additional rake edge holding power. Install the two-inch mark towards the eave of the roof with the recommended accounting for the recommended field shingle overhang.
Continue stacking the shingles along the rake butting the shingles 3 5/8” and 2” marks together thereby maintaining a shingle reveal to the weather of 5 5/8”. A line can be “snapped” between the marks extending the layout for the field shingle layout throughout the roof surface.
The shingle can also be used as a starter shingle along eaves without using the marks for layout. If a 5 5/8” offset for field shingle is desirable the marks can be used for that purpose along the eave as long as the shingle is not separated at the point of perforation.
Six nails are required for each shingle. Nails should be positioned 1” in from the edge into sound trims. The nails should be positioned as near as possible (max. 3”) to the eaves while avoiding the sealant. They must be of sufficient length to penetrate into the substrate ¾” or through the thickness of the decking. Nails are to be 11or 12-gauge, corrosion resistant roofing nails with 3/8” heads.

LAYOUT STARTER ROLL
Our layout starter roll is a granular product with field shingle layout marks. The starter shingle roll comes in a 50’ length and in a 9” width. The product is rolled along the rake edge of a roof creating an instant tape measure like effect for field shingle placement.
The starter roll is provided with a release liner and when removed is adhered to the drip edge. The first layout mark is to abut the top terminal edge of the first field shingle being installed. Any excess starter shingle is cut off at the point where the shingle extends off the eave of the roof. As field shingles are installed the top terminal edge of the filed shingle is placed on each mark going up the field of the roof.
The marks can be joined for rake to rake by “snapping” a line between the marks. This will maintain straight coursing as the field shingles are being installed. The layout starter shingle is intended for metric shingles which require a 5 5/8” shingle reveal to the weather.
